Issue 97: October 19, 2011  The Useful and the Usable in Web Design

Summary

Introduction

Joel FWelcome to Design View - Weekly!

The big news is that we've been given the go-ahead to join Tech Times and Tribune as a weekly newsletter, thanks largely to your ongoing and enthusiastic support.

So, this week has been another busy one at DesignFestival. Tara Hornor dug up 16 great creepy vector packs you'll want to look at if your clients have you producing designs for Halloween, and we looked at 20 logos that use animals.

Brian Suda - one of the web's great thinkers - gave us some great advice on enhancing your user targeting for the mobile web, which some of you may be thinking about with the recent launch of the iPhone 4S.

And finally, we took a look at some incredible new technology from Adobe that de-blurs images as if by magic. There's no indication from the company as to when end-users will be able to use it, but we can pretty safely assume that it is coming in a future version of Photoshop.

That's all from me! Until next edition, have a great week!

Adobe Previews Deblurring Technology

Adobe has unveiled a mind-blowing technology at MAX 2011: a feature that de-blurs photographs, whether they've been taken by a shaky hand or are for some reason too soft, and restores them into sharp, clear images.

The demo that excited the audience the most was the restoration of blurry text on a poster into crisp, easily readable type.

The technology shown is a "sneak" and Adobe says that there's no guarantee that a sneak will make its way into the next version of Photoshop or even the subsequent versions, but it is hard to see them leaving it outthat feature alone would probably move a tonne of product (and, being Photoshop, a tonne of torrents, too).

You can check out video of the demo in the YouTube clip belowwhich, ironically, could use some deblurring technology itself.

Enhance User Targeting for the Mobile Web

The goal for any web site should be to know your customers in order to deliver to them the most appropriate content.

This goal is even more important with mobile sitesnot only do you need to know your customers, but you need to know what they are likely to be doing on your mobile site, as well as where they'll be when they're doing it. Traditional web site customers are most likely sitting at a desk facing a large monitor that has a decent resolution. Visitors who are browsing your mobile site are unlikely to be in the same circumstancesthey might be waiting in line, riding on the train or the bus, running to the departure gate, or lost in an unfamiliar town late at night and trying to get somewhere.
