Consumers More Likely to Shop in Store Rather Than Online
By: Soud Alabbasi

In a telephone survey conducted by Ipsos Public Affairs of 1,001 adults in the US, 87% of the respondents plan on spending the same or less on gifts this holiday season in comparison to last year's holiday season.

Also, almost half of the respondents have been looking for deals throughout the year, but only 18% plan to shop on Black Friday or Cyber Monday.

As for the usage of online coupons and coupon codes, about 48% plan to use the web before making a purchase to save some dollars.

When asked about time spent searching for the best prices for each holiday purchase, 45% of respondents said they spend less than an hour for each purchase. 38% spend from 1-3 hours for each purchase, and 14% spend more than 3 hours looking for the best price.

There are many ways for consumers to save money, and when asked about the types of opportunities used to save, 50% of respondents answered newspaper or magazine coupons, 47% used in-store promotions, and only 25% use online coupon codes.

Before making a purchase, less than half said they are likely to look for online coupons, while 51% responded that they are unlikely to do so. Women are also more likely to use online coupons than men (52% vs. 43%.).

As for the experience of in-store vs. online shopping, 69% said that they prefer to shop in retail stores if the deal was the same as the online deal, and 47% would shop online if the deal was better than the one in the store.

Offers.com CEO Steve Schaffer says, "With a majority of U.S. consumers being not likely to look for online coupons or coupon codes when they shop this holiday season, millions of consumers may let savings pass them by.

"Online shopping can provide much better value, selection, and convenience than shopping at retail, and online coupons offer extra discounts that can't be found elsewhere," he adds.

Offiers.com commissioned the survey. There is a related infographic here.
