Find New Employees with Social Media Abby Johnson | Staff Writer Hiring new employees is not an easy task. Employers want to know who their potential hires really are, but, unfortunately, the interviewing process isn't always very telling. As a result, many businesses are finding new methods for recruiting and hiring, which involves social media. According to this video report, businesses are not only using social channels to research potential employees, but they are also using it to do the actual hiring. We've known for a while now that businesses were warming up to the idea of social media, but a new study from Citibank shows exactly how much they are. The report shows that social media adoption among small businesses is up to 36 percent, which is up from 19 percent only a year ago.
For recruiting, specifically, businesses are finding that engagement is higher on social networks than it is through conventional practices. Methods such as newspapers, billboards, and fliers are becoming ineffective, since consumers have trained themselves to block these mediums out. Today, consumers spend 700 billion minutes on Facebook each month, send 140 million tweets on Twitter per day, and utilize LinkedIn consistently for their professional network. Therefore, businesses need to be in these same places. Social sites also allow recruiting businesses to advertise for particular skills on their sites. For instance, advertising on LinkedIn starts as low as $10 per day, and similar ads on Facebook start at $1. Businesses can also utilize Facebook's Marketplace for free or LinkedIn's job board for $200. Incidentally, Twitter is also working on its own self-serve ad platform that is expected to be released sometime this year. Although social media definitely has its perks in terms of recruiting, businesses do need to be careful with all the private information it reveals about users. In the offline world, employers have restrictions about what they can ask potential hires, especially in regards to the individual's age or religious background. However, this information is often readily available on social networks. If employers have knowledge of this information, employees could assume that their job fate was determined from their personal background. So, what can businesses do to prevent this illegal behavior? For starters, they could have a social media manager relay the information that is allowed to the hiring manager. Also, employers could consult with their HR representative to make sure they were abiding by the law. Both of these tactics work to ensure that the employer's decision is unbiased.
