Shipper lobby group The Shippers’ Voice has hit out at shipping lines being granted state aid, claiming it sends out the wrong message to the industry.
MD of The Shippers’ Voice Andrew Trail said that shipping lines were facing problems because vessel owners had purchased too many ships in the past.
He said: “It wasn’t that long ago that such people were making obscene amounts of money! It was the prospect of huge returns on investment that fed the frenzy of new ship orders, not a careful consideration of what the market needed.'"

If you use Twitter or create content, you have probably figured out by now that it can be a great tool for driving traffic to your site. There are measures you can take to expand this if your content is not bringing in the Twitter traffic on its own.

If you're not seeing much traffic from Twitter, there is a chance it's coming in anyway, and you're just not aware of it. For that matter, if you are getting a lot of traffic from Twitter, you may be getting even more than you thought.
Stan Pugsley, director of business intelligence for iCrossing says that nearly 70% of referral traffic from Twitter goes unmeasured, particularly if you are using web analytics tools like Google Analytics or Omniture.
'The problem is not with the web analytics tools, but with the Twitter applications like Tweetdeck and Twhirl that are not based in an Internet Browser,' explains Pugsley. 'When a user clicks through a link in a tweet, those applications do not register a referring URL that can be picked up by the destination website. It appears that they are coming directly to the site. According to TweetStats, only 31.7% of tweets originate from twitter.com, and those are the visitors that can be tracked back to tweets.'"

Google has quietly gotten rid of PageRank in Webmaster Tools. Barry Schwartz at Search Engine Roundtable points to a thread featuring an explanation from Google Webmaster Trends Analyst Susan Moskwa.
'We've been telling people for a long time that they shouldn't focus on PageRank so much; many site owners seem to think it's the most important metric for them to track, which is simply not true,' says Moskwa. 'We removed it because we felt it was silly to tell people not to think about it, but then to show them the data, implying that they should look at it.'
Search marketers are wondering why Google tells people not to focus on PageRank and removes it from Webmaster Tools, but still keeps it in the Google Toolbar. 'Back in 2007, Google wanted feedback on removing PageRank from the Toolbar,' says Schwartz. 'I felt it was a good idea but the idea died out. Google cannot remove PageRank from the Toolbar, it is too much of their branding. No matter how much Matt Cutts and the Google search quality and webmaster trends team want it removed, I cannot see Google's executives allowing it.'"

Recently we received some questions about how Google uses (or more accurately, doesn't use) the 'keywords' meta tag in ranking web search results. Suppose you have two website owners, Alice and Bob. Alice runs a company called AliceCo and Bob runs BobCo. One day while looking at Bob's site, Alice notices that Bob has copied some of the words that she uses in her 'keywords' meta tag. Even more interesting, Bob has added the words 'AliceCo' to his 'keywords' meta tag. Should Alice be concerned?
At least for Google's web search results currently (September 2009), the answer is no. Google doesn't use the 'keywords' meta tag in our web search ranking"

The Web's top media brands and their troops have invaded New York this week for the annual Advertising Week conference. AOL, Microsoft, and Yahoo all have big plans to help win the hearts and minds of agency execs.
AOL will put its original content on display throughout the week as its editors talk up the company's vertical sites and blogs at the lounge it has set up at the Times Center in The New York Times Building. The 25-year old firm is entrenched in a do-or-die battle to convince advertisers and their agencies that AOL's properties are fresh and relevant. According to AOL, 75 percent of the company's content is original, up from 30 percent a year ago.
'The AOL brand turnaround has got to be one of the toughest jobs on the Web,' said AOL CEO Tim Armstrong yesterday morning during a breakfast with ad industry journalists. 'I think the strategy is really powerful and is sticking with customers, especially the customers that are here this week,' he noted."

The Yahoo search experience might at some point change in a very surprising way. That Bing may take over, we've come to accept. But at least one high-ranking Yahoo employee thinks Google could get a shot, too.
Let's talk about said employee for a moment. Burke Culligan is the senior director of product planning and strategy over Yahoo's front page and My Yahoo, so he's in a good position to discuss significant adjustments. Also, Culligan's worked for Yahoo since October of 2005, so it's not like he's some newbie who doesn't know the score.
Judge the next bit for yourself, then.

Google's Matt Cutts Addresses Remaining Concerns
You may recall back at SMX Seattle earlier this year, Google's Matt Cutts talked at length about paid links. He touched upon the topic of Google being able to read javascript after giving out advice for so long to use javascript as a way to keep Google from reading paid links.
When asked about this, Matt said Googlebot had gotten smarter. He noted that Google began changing its messaging on the subject around 2007-2008 to stop mentioning javascript but to nofollow or do a redirect through a URL which is blocked through robots.txt.
Cutts noted that even on the onclick in javascript, the crawl and indexing team had submitted code so that it would respect a rel='nofollow'. So you can put a rel='nofollow' attribute on a link that's running in javascript, and more often than not, Google will make sure it doesn't flow pagerank even if they're executing the javascript.
Cutts did say, however, that if you want to be completely safe, to nofollow or link through things that are blocked.
Cutts revisited the topic in a recent upload to the Google Webmaster Central YouTube channel, in response to the following user question:
